Free Xbox Headset Update Adds Bluetooth LE Audio Support

Microsoft is releasing a free firmware update that significantly upgrades its 2024 Xbox Wireless Headset. The update adds support for Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) Audio, a newer standard that promises several key improvements for gamers. This means users gain new features and better performance without any additional cost.

Key Benefits of Bluetooth LE Audio

The transition from older Bluetooth Classic to Bluetooth LE Audio brings tangible advantages:

  • Better Battery Life: The LE standard is more power-efficient, which could extend the headset’s usage time between charges.
  • Lower Latency: Reduced audio delay improves synchronization between game visuals and sound, crucial for competitive gaming.
  • Super Wideband Stereo for Voice: This is a major upgrade for voice chat. It maintains high-quality stereo audio even when the microphone is active, preventing the typical drop in sound quality experienced during two-way communication on Bluetooth Classic. Microsoft calls this feature “super wideband stereo.”

Enhanced Compatibility with Xbox Handhelds and PC

The update is particularly beneficial for owners of Microsoft’s handheld devices, like the Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X. Clear, high-quality voice chat has been a challenge on these devices with standard Bluetooth, but Bluetooth LE Audio aims to solve it.

On Windows 11 PCs, the headset can now also take advantage of Microsoft’s new shared audio feature (currently in Insider Preview), allowing audio to stream to two Bluetooth output devices simultaneously.

Availability and “Coming Soon” Note

The Bluetooth LE Audio update is available now for the Xbox Wireless Headset via the Xbox Accessories app. However, the “super wideband stereo” feature for pristine voice chat is listed as “Coming soon” specifically for the ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X handhelds. The broader Bluetooth LE functionality is live for general use on PC and other supported devices.

A Valuable Free Upgrade

This update represents a meaningful, no-cost enhancement for Xbox Wireless Headset owners. By embracing Bluetooth LE Audio, Microsoft is future-proofing the accessory, improving core performance metrics like battery and latency, and specifically addressing the voice chat quality needs of its growing handheld gaming ecosystem.
