Xneelo Breaks Ground on Second Samrand Data Centre

South African hosting provider Xneelo has broken ground on its second Xneelo Samrand data centre in Gauteng. The company calls this expansion a major step in its long-term plan to support growing customer demand with scalable and reliable infrastructure.

The new facility will mirror the design of Xneelo’s first Samrand data centre, which launched in 2013. However, it will include further upgrades for energy efficiency and performance. These enhancements will power next-generation offerings, including Xneelo Cloud, colocation, and self-managed server products.

According to CEO Deon de Villiers, infrastructure is the backbone of South Africa’s digital economy. “By expanding our Samrand footprint, we’re building for the future of South African businesses,” he said. “They need stability, performance, and scalability to compete globally.”

The location was chosen strategically. Samrand offers robust power infrastructure, which the new Xneelo Samrand data centre will fully leverage. Facility manager Juan-Pierre van Zyl noted that the original site already outperforms industry standards for power efficiency. The new build will extend that success with higher energy capacity—without sacrificing uptime or sustainability.

For example, the existing data centre uses a 2N power design. This means two fully independent power and cooling systems run in parallel. Each side has separate A and B power feeds, backed by redundant UPS units and diesel generators. On-site fuel reserves can keep generators running for up to seven days straight.

Additionally, the facility is carrier-neutral and hosts cross-connects to Internet Exchange South Africa (INX-ZA). This setup ensures low-latency, high-speed connectivity for clients across the continent.

Cooling also reflects Xneelo’s green focus. The system uses free cooling and cold-aisle containment technology. As a result, it cuts reliance on mechanical chillers and delivers significant power savings—lowering both carbon emissions and operational costs.

Construction will continue through 2026, with completion expected by October. The project aligns with Xneelo’s “Strong Foundations” brand initiative, reinforcing its role as a trusted digital infrastructure partner.

In short, the second Xneelo Samrand data centre isn’t just about more space—it’s about smarter, greener, and more resilient infrastructure for South Africa’s digital future.
